Do You Crave Power? Care About the Environment? Then SKYACTIV from Mazda Is for You

Last updated 1 year ago

The new Mazdas seen on the road are nothing like their predecessors. Mazda’s SkyActiv technology has changed the way these cars operate for the better. This new technology is their way of stepping into the future by making every single component of their new vehicles work harmoniously. To accomplish this, instead of redesigning their old models, they engineered these new vehicles from the ground up. Take a look at how Mazda accomplished all this.

Engine

Mazda’s SkyActiv engine displays their approach to the entire SkyActiv lineup. Every component of the new 2.0-liter engine was tested and refined. Their goal was an engine that would produce 15% more torque, and consume 15% less fuel. The major step they took towards accomplishing this was raising the engine’s compression ratio to 13.1 for the U.S. market. As of February 2012, Mazda’s SkyActiv engine was the highest-compression gasoline engine in the world. This high compression ratio allows more of the energy stored in the fuel to be used. Gasoline direct-injection allows this high-compression engine to run smoothly, while also adding to the increased efficiency. The addition of a performance exhaust header system and free-breathing air intake allows the entire engine to stay strong throughout the rev-range.

Drivetrain

The SkyActiv driveline begins as the power from the engine is channeled into the new SkyActiv transmission. This transmission cannot be classified in any standard way because it utilizes the best features of all leading modern transmissions. The use of a small torque converter allows for an easy take-off before switching over to the multi-plate clutch system for quick shifting. This lightweight transmission is controlled by an advanced mechatronic control module, which is the key for the transmission’s efficiency and smoothness.

Body

Mazda decided to design the strongest and safest body possible. The SkyActiv platform uses high and ultra-high strength steel alloys to achieve a vehicle body that is 30% stronger than before. The design of the body allowed an 8% decrease in weight, adding to efficiency.
