Roger Beasley Mazda Endless Country Summer: The Crew with Winner Teresa Janek

Teresa on her new Mazda 6i Sport: "My husband has enjoyed driving the car. We have been talking about getting him a smaller car for better gas mileage since he currently drives a truck, so the timing couldn't have been better. I have to learn how to drive a standard first so I'm just a passenger at this moment. Everyone at home and work were just as surprised and overwhelmed as we were. It's still kind of hard to believe that I won. It hasn't really soaked in yet."

    The 2013 Mazda CX-5: Making a Splash in 2011

    Last updated 1 year ago

Recently, auto writers were able to test drive the new 2013 Mazda CX-5 on the barren volcanic landscape of Iceland. The journalists drove four different CX-5 models, all camouflaged, and all incorporating the full suite of SKYACTIV® technologies – engines, transmissions, bodies, chassis and suspensions. There were two 2-liter SKYACTIV-G gasoline models, one 2WD and one 4WD, and two 4WDSKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter twin-turbo diesels. Both engines had either a SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.

Needless to say, they were floored. From Automobile Magazine: “…the CX-5 is among the most fun-to-drive compact crossovers on the market. Mazda has perfectly captured the Zoom-Zoom ethos in a practical and stylish crossover.”

And from Car and Driver Magazine: "This is the SUV for those who promised they’d never stoop to driving one. This is where fun-to-drive lives when there are kids to convey, dogs to deliver, or a long weekend’s worth of camping gear to haul."

The Mazda CX-5 will be fully revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 15th and is expected to come to an Austin Mazda dealership near you in early 2012.

Zoom-Zoom: A Brief History of Mazda's Rotary Engine

    Last updated 1 year ago

Whether you are a Mazda owner or not, you’ve likely heard of the Japanese car manufacturer’s unique utilization of the rotary engine—a technological innovation that allows Mazda vehicles more power and speed than most others in their class.

Would you like more information on how and why Mazda has favored this technology for the last fifty years? Learn more by reading the following summation of the Mazda rotary engine’s inception and evolution.

    The Wankel Concept

Mazda’s rotary engine was the brainchild of German engineer Felix Wankel. In the year 1919, a 17-year-old Wankel had a dream in which he constructed a gasoline engine that was half-turbine, half-reciprocated. His concept, which relied on intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust during engine rotation, was eventually realized in 1957 as the rotary engine—a comparatively small car engine that smoothly converts rotary motion into incredible driving force.

    Rotary Through the Years

Following the rotary engine’s official release by Wankel and motorcycle manufacturing partner NSU in 1959, approximately one hundred international companies made partnership overtures. It was Mazda president Tsuneji Matsuda who won out, however, and a contract with Wankel and NSU was signed in July of 1961.

Since that time, Mazda has debuted ten of its own Wankel renditions, beginning with the original 40A (1961) and ending with the latest released 13B-MSP Renesis engine, which first appeared as part of the 2004 Mazda RX-8. Mazda hasn’t stopped here, however—research is ongoing, with several newer engines being tested in concept cars for future commercial use.

Do you still have more questions about the Mazda rotary engine? Give us a call at Mazda of Georgetown! We can provide an in-depth description of the Mazda Renesis engine’s features and give you details on how this newest model differs from older rotaries and future prototypes, including the brand new concept: SKYACTIV Technology. SKYACTIV Technology: Coming Soon to Your Mazda Dealership

    "The Sky's the Limit"

This phrase stands for an all-new generation of Mazda technologies and symbolizes a new era for the company. Mazda's unique way of engineering has always included one key element: the joy of driving. The principal goal of all Mazda engineers when developing SKYACTIV Technology was to dramatically increase vehicle efficiency for all next-generation vehicles by improving fuel economy and reducing CO2 emissions while, at the same time, further enhancing safety and driving fun. It had to be clean, but it had to be Zoom-Zoom.

It starts with a range of new technologies that have gone into the highly-efficient direct injection SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine. Exceptionally strong yet remarkably efficient, its 14:1 compression ratio solves all the issues that until now have prevented this approach from being feasible.

With a new engine comes new suspension, steering and brake systems that combine nimble handling with ride comfort and stability when pushing the vehicle to its limits. The SKYACTIV-Chassis also achieves superior rigidity from a lightweight design.

Sitting on all of this is a redesigned body. Lighter, stronger and safer, Mazda's developers went back to the drawing board to design SKYACTIV-Body, which integrates lightweight engineering, increased material strength and more efficient structures.

It all comes back to the slogan that symbolizes it all. "The sky's the limit" is the thinking behind the technology, a true clean-sheet-of-paper approach, the likes of which no other car company has ever undertaken before.
